The Spencer Entomological Museum was a gift to G.J. Spencer upon his retirement in 1953 (he taught from 1927-1953), from his students and the Department of Zoology, to thank him for his contribution to the department.
Many private collections have been incorporated into the museum including: Whitehouse, Bucknell, Cannings, Stuart (Odonata); Bucknell, Spencer (Orthoptera); Downes, Scudder (Hemiptera); Spencer (Anoplura, Mallophaga, Siphonaptera); Blackmore, Llewellyn-Jones, Kimmich (Lepidoptera); Stace-Smith, Guppy (Coleoptera); Foxlee (Diptera, Hymenoptera).
There are about 600,000 specimens. Most (500,000) are dried and pinned (ex., beetles and butterflies), but soft-bodied or delicate insects, like larvae or mayflies are in alcohol (75,000), and minute insects, like fleas are on glass slides (25,000).
